Why Temperature Matters More Than You'd Think
Bedroom temperature is one of the most well evidenced factors in sleep quality. The NHS and The Sleep Charity both recommend keeping a bedroom between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. This is not an arbitrary comfort preference, your body's core temperature naturally drops in the hours before sleep as part of preparing for rest, and a room that's too warm works directly against that process.
According to The Sleep Charity, rooms above roughly 24 degrees are likely to cause restlessness, particularly affecting REM sleep, the stage most associated with feeling genuinely rested the next day. At the other end, a room around 12 degrees makes it difficult to fall asleep in the first place. The useful range sits between these extremes, and it's worth noting that individual comfort does vary, some sleep research suggests a slightly broader comfortable band exists depending on bedding weight and personal physiology, but the core principle holds: cooler, within reason, outperforms warmer.
The Role Of Light And Melatonin
Light matters just as much as temperature, and not only the obvious kind. Even small amounts of light are detectable through closed eyelids and can interfere with melatonin production, the hormone that regulates your sleep wake cycle. A room that never gets fully dark, because of streetlights, standby lights on electronics, or thin curtains, is working against your body's own signalling system every single night, regardless of how tired you feel at bedtime.
This is why sleep guidance consistently points to genuinely light blocking curtains or blinds, and why some sleep specialists recommend being able to hold your hand in front of your face without seeing it in a properly darkened bedroom. It sounds like a small detail. The mechanism behind it isn't small at all.
The Noise You've Learned To Tune Out
Noise is the factor most sleep advice skips entirely, despite genuinely strong evidence behind it. World Health Organization guidance on environmental noise recommends keeping average night time outdoor noise below roughly 40 decibels where possible, specifically because exposure above that level is associated with measurable sleep disturbance, even when the noise doesn't fully wake you.
This is the part worth understanding properly: noise can fragment sleep architecture, causing brief arousals you don't consciously remember the next morning, without ever waking you in a way you'd notice or recall. Traffic, a partner's snoring, plumbing, or noisy neighbours can all do this. You can wake up having technically slept eight hours and still feel unrested, because the sleep itself was repeatedly interrupted at a level below conscious awareness. Soft furnishings, thicker curtains, rugs and upholstered furniture genuinely absorb some sound and reduce a room's overall noise reflection, though they won't meaningfully block noise coming through an external wall or window, that's a glazing and building fabric question, not a furnishing one.
What's Actually In The Air
Materials play a quieter, less obvious role. Furniture, mattresses and some flooring adhesives can release volatile organic compounds, VOCs, into the air, particularly when new. UK government indoor air quality guidance notes that VOC concentrations indoors can run considerably higher than outdoors, and off gassing from new furniture is typically most concentrated in the first few days after installation, tapering off over subsequent weeks.
This won't affect everyone the same way.
