The Circadian Mechanism, In Plain Terms
Your body's internal clock, the circadian rhythm, is primarily regulated by light exposure. This mechanism was only properly identified in the early 2000s, when researchers discovered a third type of light sensitive cell in the human eye, separate from the rods and cones used for vision, specifically responsible for signalling time of day to the brain. This is well established circadian biology, not a wellness trend, exposure to light at the wrong times genuinely shifts hormone timing in a measurable way.
Morning Light And Alertness
Morning light exposure helps suppress melatonin production and supports daytime alertness, effectively telling your body that the day has started. Rooms with limited natural light, or artificial lighting that's dim or poorly positioned relative to where you actually work or read, are consistently associated in research with reduced alertness and increased reports of low mood, particularly during winter months in the UK, where natural daylight hours are already limited.
Why Natural Light Is A Building Question, Not Just A Bulb Question
Window size, position and orientation, whether a room faces north or south, what's obstructing the light outside, and glazing type all determine how much usable daylight actually reaches a room, regardless of how good the artificial lighting is. A north facing room with a small window will struggle to feel genuinely bright no matter what bulbs are fitted, while a well positioned skylight or an enlarged window opening can transform a previously dim room. The Actual Metric Behind "Warm" And "Cool" Bulbs
The discovery of that third eye cell gave circadian lighting science something to actually measure: melanopic lux, or Equivalent Melanopic Lux, EML. It's genuinely different from the standard lux or lumens printed on a bulb's packaging. Standard lux measures brightness as the eye perceives it for seeing. Melanopic lux measures a light source's effect on the body's separate, time signalling system specifically, two bulbs can measure identically bright and still have meaningfully different circadian effects, which is exactly why a room that looks bright enough can still be circadian dim.
The WELL Building Standard puts a specific number on this: its circadian lighting criteria call for roughly 200 to 250 equivalent melanopic lux at eye level for at least four hours in the morning, dropping to well below 50 in the evening. These thresholds were developed primarily for offices, but the underlying principle, meaningfully bright, blue rich light in the morning and genuinely dim, warm light at night, applies just as much at home. This is also where "tunable white" bulbs earn their name, shifting automatically through the day rather than sitting at a fixed colour temperature, closer to blue white at midday and warm amber by evening. Getting The Balance Right, Room By Room
